Words of Life in Times of Tragedy

"The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked."  Prov. 10:11

Once again, our nation was brought to its knees by a senseless act of violence.  Never do you hear the word "prayer" used in greater proportions than after such an event as we saw yesterday with the bombings at the Boston Marathon.  My Facebook and Twitter feeds were filled with promises of prayer for the city and for those directly affected by the tragedy.

I truly hope that all who have claimed prayer for the situation has truly stopped and bowed their head to the One True God who is capable of bringing hope to the hopeless and who can shine light in the midst of darkness.  Perhaps if we would all pray just a little more for our nation in the absence of times like these, rather than just in the midst of them, then maybe they'd be a little less frequent, but we'll talk about that another day.

It is truly during times like this that the lost world is looking for words of hope from God's people.  We are tasked with such a great opportunity to be His spokesperson for love, healing, and forgiveness.  What an awesome mission field we have in the days to come!

The writer of Proverbs tells us that the mouths of the righteous offer life giving words, and those words should provide encouragement and love in the midst of uncertainty and hurting.  You might think that you're not normally good with your words, but this is your time to be used greatly by God to draw a lost world closer to Him.

The writer tells us a few chapters later:

"The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life."  Prov. 15:4

The analogy of a tree producing life reminds me of all of the Scripture in the New Testament that speaks of bearing fruit.  If you are offering words of healing to those who are hurting or to those who question why such a tragedy could occur, then you are planting seeds that could one day result in a life totally transformed by the love of God.  I truly believe that God uses our words during times like this to draw lost men and women to Him.

I hope and pray that you will make it your mission to offer seeds of hope to those around you during the weeks to come.  You don't have to have all of the answers, but you can share with them how God's love truly transcends all of these acts of useless violence.  It is only the hope that He offers through Jesus that can bring true peace to our weary land.

Join me in praying for our nation, for Boston, and for the role that we as God's people will play in the lives of those who are looking for Light in the midst of darkness.

Heartfelt Reflections of a Country Church

The smells, sounds, and people of country churches stir an emotion within me that is deep and powerful. For those who have never had the opportunity to experience this blessed experience, let me explain.   From the moment you step into the vestibule (never called a foyer in a rural church), you instantly smell the footsteps of every person who has crossed that threshold - the mother with a load of kids in tow, the farmer, the truck driver, the wayward child. If those paneled walls could talk, they would tell of grace and guilt and sorrow and joy that couldn’t be hidden on the faces of the souls that dared to cross that doorway. Those walls would write books of clinched fists, tears on the altar, and singing from the saints. The smell of the aged carpet, whose color may have caused an outright quarrel in a business meeting, the creak of the floor, and the golden memorial tags lead you to a nostalgic thing of days gone by - a pew, padded if you’re lucky.   As you wait for the ob...

The Most Important Piece of the Puzzle

"Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.""   Luke 23:43 Our family loves finding a good deal at a yard sale.  The closer we get to spring, the more antsy I get for a nice Saturday morning ride through all of the area subdivisions where the best yard sales are generally located.  You can really find some great deals going through people's junk! Some years ago, my kids picked up one of those 500 piece puzzles at a yard sale -- you know, the ones that you typically get halfway done with and then lose interest because it's much more time consuming than you ever imagined!  Anyways, I was actually were impressed by our dedication to see it through. However, I was devastated to discover that only 494 pieces appeared to be in the box.  You can only come to such a precise conclusion by coming to the end of the feat and being able to count the holes that were left in the beautiful picture of a scenic landscape, which no...

From Lemons to Lemonade

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus."  Phil. 2:5 Last Friday I found myself with five very anxious children who were excited about going to swim in the pool in my mother-in-law's subdivision.  As we approached the pool, we all marveled at how nobody was there and that we would have the pool all to ourselves.  It wasn't until we got a little closer that we realized why nobody was there . . . there was a padlock on the gate and the pool was closed for maintenance! As we walked away and I very quickly realized that I had five children who were dressed and ready to go swimming, I said to them, "Well, looks like we're going to have to take our lemons and make lemonade!" My daughter had never heard that expression so she asked me what it meant.  I explained to her that it basically meant that you take something bad and turn it into something good.  Although the pool was closed, we could still make it a fun day by going to the beac...
