Speaking God's Love Language: Quality Time

When asked what some of God's promises are, the one that is often quoted first by many Christians is that God will never leave us nor forsake us.  That promise comes from the book of Joshua and then is quoted again in Hebrews.  That promise gives us peace and comfort in times of uncertainty.  It gives us the calm assurance that God is right there with us, no matter what we are facing.

He doesn't just walk with us through the tough times, He is right there beside us during the joyful times.

"The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save.  He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing."  Zephaniah 3:17

We serve a God who isn't a "part-time god"!  He is ALWAYS there for us.  David very beautifully reminds us that we can never get away from the presence of God:

"Where can I go from your Spirit?  Where can I flee from your presence?  If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there."  Psalm 139:7-8

Does it amaze you that the God of the universe is crazy about you and makes Himself available to you at all times?

See, here's the thing about God.  He's a Gentleman.  He doesn't demand that His followers spend time with Him.  He puts that ball in our court and gives us the assurance that when we choose to commune with Him, He will always be available.

So, how do you spend quality time with someone you can't physically see?

The way that we spend quality time with God is no different than the way we spend quality time with friends or family.  Quality time requires being intentional with your time and with avoiding distractions.  Just as your friend or loved one desires your undivided attention, so does God.  He shouldn't have to compete with your phone, your book, your computer, or the TV.

We should strive to spend time with the Father with such consistency that it becomes second nature to us.  Just as my relationship with my friends and family is contingent on the effort I put into it, so is my relationship with God.

One of my favorite songs begins with a quote from the eighth Psalm that says, "Who am I that you are mindful of me?".  It truly baffles my feeble mind that God desires to spend time with little 'ole me!  But He does, and He wants to spend time with you, too.

So, how much quality time do you invest in your relationship with God?  Do you make spending time in His Word and communing with Him in prayer a priority in your day?

Thankfully, God is patient and He is patiently waiting for each of us to draw near to Him by giving Him something that is so precious to each of us:  our time.  My prayer for you is that your time with God become an unforsakable part of your day and that it ultimately becomes second nature to you.  Take some time right now to have some one on one time with the God of the universe.  Clear away all distractions and give Him your undivided attention.

Heartfelt Reflections of a Country Church

The smells, sounds, and people of country churches stir an emotion within me that is deep and powerful. For those who have never had the opportunity to experience this blessed experience, let me explain.   From the moment you step into the vestibule (never called a foyer in a rural church), you instantly smell the footsteps of every person who has crossed that threshold - the mother with a load of kids in tow, the farmer, the truck driver, the wayward child. If those paneled walls could talk, they would tell of grace and guilt and sorrow and joy that couldn’t be hidden on the faces of the souls that dared to cross that doorway. Those walls would write books of clinched fists, tears on the altar, and singing from the saints. The smell of the aged carpet, whose color may have caused an outright quarrel in a business meeting, the creak of the floor, and the golden memorial tags lead you to a nostalgic thing of days gone by - a pew, padded if you’re lucky.   As you wait for the ob...

The Most Important Piece of the Puzzle

"Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.""   Luke 23:43 Our family loves finding a good deal at a yard sale.  The closer we get to spring, the more antsy I get for a nice Saturday morning ride through all of the area subdivisions where the best yard sales are generally located.  You can really find some great deals going through people's junk! Some years ago, my kids picked up one of those 500 piece puzzles at a yard sale -- you know, the ones that you typically get halfway done with and then lose interest because it's much more time consuming than you ever imagined!  Anyways, I was actually were impressed by our dedication to see it through. However, I was devastated to discover that only 494 pieces appeared to be in the box.  You can only come to such a precise conclusion by coming to the end of the feat and being able to count the holes that were left in the beautiful picture of a scenic landscape, which no...

From Lemons to Lemonade

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus."  Phil. 2:5 Last Friday I found myself with five very anxious children who were excited about going to swim in the pool in my mother-in-law's subdivision.  As we approached the pool, we all marveled at how nobody was there and that we would have the pool all to ourselves.  It wasn't until we got a little closer that we realized why nobody was there . . . there was a padlock on the gate and the pool was closed for maintenance! As we walked away and I very quickly realized that I had five children who were dressed and ready to go swimming, I said to them, "Well, looks like we're going to have to take our lemons and make lemonade!" My daughter had never heard that expression so she asked me what it meant.  I explained to her that it basically meant that you take something bad and turn it into something good.  Although the pool was closed, we could still make it a fun day by going to the beac...
